about

Narayama

‘The Ballad of Narayama’ is a 1983 Japanese film by director Shōhei Imamura. It is an adaptation of the book ‘Narayama Bushikō’ by Shichirō Fukazawa. The film explores the legendary practice of obasute, in which elderly people at the age of 70 withdraw in the mountains to die. In this way they make sure there is enough food for the rest of the community. In the film the 69 year old Orin uses the last year of her life preparing for her withdrawal. In this period she also tries to prepare her children and grandchildren for their life after her death. Baritone solo by Peter Broekhuizen.
